In striking shades of red ochre, this egret is looking for its food. They are white birds with yellow beaks and I regularly see them on the Cairns Esplanade. The paintings are a pair with the birds facing one another, intricate patterns in the background. While the Wet Tropics region is home to over a third of the country’s freshwater fish, it is home to nearly half of Australia’s birds. This means that it boasts more than 370 bird species. All birds are called doondoes in Jirrbal.
