Seagulls live near the sea. They have short legs and long wings with white and grey feathers. You have likely encountered them and sometimes been annoyed by their scavenging. They are plentiful along the Cairns Esplanade, a favourite spot for birdwatchers.

Mangroves are at the northern end and at the southern end of the Cairns Esplanade near the Cairns marina. Seagulls go searching in the mangroves for food. In the painting, you can see water channels in the top of the painting and the strong roots of the mangroves sitting in the sea.
